jao facilitates the european electricity market by allocating cross border transmission capacity, playing a key role at the heart of europe’s electricity market. jao does this by auctioning the available capacity. we operate on regulated markets in 17 countries on 27 borders, all of which are connected in a single trading platform with one harmonised regulated framework. in 1995 the european union set the foundation for todays regulated electricity market with the purpose to create an open marketplace demanding all tso’s to provide non-discriminatory access to all market participants to their networks. this includes the powerlines between the european countries. from the start the predecessor of jao, casc, played a leading role in these european ambitions defining new ways of cooperation. following the merger of the two leading allocation offices, casc and cao, the newly formed company has created a central point of access for electricity transmission capacity trade of 27 borders betwe
