i am an employment lawyer and executive coach for lawyers i co-founded a law practice 18 years ago which has now grown to be 50 strong. i would be lying if i said that this success was just a breeze. it was hard fought with many mistakes made along the way. we had some great moments such as when we won an english law society award for excellence in innovation and when we won a commission from the department for international development for a law training programme. yet the great moments were accompanied by the risk of burn out and anxiety. i eventually learned that the perceived stresses and challenges were just that: my perception. that drama was created in my own head. by addressing the way i thought about things, i could substantially affect my feelings which would drive my actions and outcomes. the responsibilities remained unchanged (the business, clients, colleagues, regulator, family) but i could live with these circumstances and achieve much more by changing my own mindset.
