the jowa educational initiative was founded by dr. gillian lakareber to help disadvantaged and rural children in africa have better access to reading materials. all the proceeds from her recently published book 'a guide to patient recruitment & retention in clinical research' available on amazon, are used to donate educational resources to these children. jowa is also a memorial initiative to remember dr. lakareber’s grandparents who were advocates of education and championed educational initiatives during their time. jeridah, william and almarina created conducive environments for children to learn from a young age. oloya alipayo was an avid educationalist and the head master of gulu primary school. amongst his peers, he was affectionately known as 'lapwony' in luo or 'mwalimu' in swahili, meaning 'the teacher' the acronym jowa was derived from the first letter of their names. *jeridah awilo oloya (17jan1931-20mar2017) *oloya alipayo lwanymoi (21jan1921-24jan2011) *william mapu
