the kabgayi eye unit is one department in kabgayi hospital located in muhanga district. kabgayi hospital is a catholic hospital (catholic diocese of kabgayi), and works in partnership with the rwandan ministry of health. the eye unit officially started in 1993, thanks to collaboration between kabgayi diocese and cbm. the eye unit really started functioning well since 2002 when the first full time ophthalmologist arrived. between 1996 and 2001, every year between 4,000 and 5,000 outpatients were consulted. between 2008 and 2011, the yearly amount of consultations had increased to 50,000 (including outreach consultations) and from 2012 up to 2016. eye surgeries increased from 170 surgeries in 1999 to 4181 in 2011, and from 3,917 in 2012 to 6,049 in 2021. currently an estimate of 80% of all eye surgeries are perfomed by the kabgayi team
