quality narrative writing relies on two key elements: story and character. in a compelling narrative, the story progresses according to logic and necessity. scenes are deliberately included and ordered, meaning they don’t exist purely for exposition, or to accomplish something the writer was unable to weave into the story organically. the characters should be vibrant and complex, and believable within the context of their story. relationships should not only reveal additional information about the characters, they should also further the plot. my approach to addressing these key elements revolves around the question “why do i care?” adjusted on a sliding scale relative to the context, genre, and target audience of the story. to do this, i use analytical skills honed while earning a degree in film theory, draw from an intimate and thorough understanding of the film and television development process, and employ critical skills perfected through extensive experience critiquing story. my
