qt medical, inc. is a medical device startup incorporated in 2013 as a spinoff of the los angeles biomedical research institute (la biomed) based in torrance, ca. qt medical aims to bring high quality 12-lead electrocardiogram (ecg) to homes by innovating technologies. qt medical was initially supported by nih grants, including over $2.2 m from the national heart, lung and blood institute. in 2 years, we developed the qtscreen. this full function ecg is designed specifically for screening newborns at 2 to 4 weeks of age for a genetic disease call the long qt syndrome (lqts). congenital lqts occurs 1 in every 2000 babies and is a known cause for the sudden infant death syndrome (sids). if lqts is diagnosed early, medical therapy is generally effective in preventing sudden, unexpected arrhythmia, and possible death. we are conducting a clinical trial on 4000 newborns using the qtscreen to screen for lqts.
