we’re two friends who graduated from undergrad in 2018, starting our first jobs in our respective careers shortly thereafter. as we shared and discussed our initial experiences in the workplace, we realized that we didn’t have much of a clue about what we were doing. we found guidance in career handbooks that were cheerfully vague, in much older professionals sharing their top-to-bottom worldviews in long thinkpieces on medium, and in the occasional inspirational linkedin post. however, there was very little meaningful information about people our own age doing what we wanted to do. how did they get there? what even, really, did people in our fields do every day at work? what did they wish they had done at our age? what did we need to do to get there? we were guessing at all these questions. some of them, we’ve worked out the answers for ourselves; others, we’re still working on. our peers face the most difficult job market in decades. now more than ever, people our age are disinclined
