at amey consulting, we have moved the mystery of data science into reality for network rail. by rolling out quartz to their staff, we have enabled them to be confident in using data to improve the journeys of millions of people per year. quartz is an online tool that processes vast amounts of network rail data to provide to-the-second information on train performance to operators across the country. the dashboard – available on both web and through the quartz mobile app – enable station staff to monitor train delays in real time and analyse delay root causes. for example, greater anglia staff use quartz to identify trains that regularly spend extra time at platforms, which accumulate delays that could propagate throughout the network. quartz generates the insights to contextualise those delays so that actions can be taken to find a solution.
