older vehicles had a replaceable paper cartridge situated inside a solid housing either connected to the engine block directly or via flow and return pipes. the vast majority of vehicles on the road today have a screw on or spin on filter that has the paper element inside a replaceable metal round unit. this makes changing the oil filter much easier because once the oil has been drained from the engine the oil filter can be unscrewed and replaced the same way a light bulb is changed. some manufacturers have started to revert back to a paper filter inside a solid housing in order to keep costs of replacement down, however the oil filter is one of the cheapest car parts on a vehicle to replace.
