excel as a db/ecom/erp admin tool. one extremely powerful use of excel is that of a data admin tool facilitating the management of data within an e-commerce site or erp system. typically these platforms have a predefined set of admin tools which often leaves the user in need of custom functions. let's look at shopify for example. it has a fairly strong set of order export and order management tools either native or through 3rd party apps. but these 3rd party apps are also then closed in their functionality. using microsoft excel for several clients we have created extremely agile admin tools for the receipt of order data and its formatting (for address labels etc) and analysis (for b.i) directly within excel. data is either exported from shopify or pulled down via the shopify api into excel and then massaged using vba. this leaves the data in a user familiar interface and one which is already suited to extensibility with formulas, charts and other b.i tools that are a native part of e
