xtreme farming is an on-line game that challenges players to grow the most food and generate the most carbon credits in a single growing season on a simulated african farm. a player’s strategy relies on revenue from the sale of crops and produce at the local village. gamers implement their strategy by recruiting “virtual farmers” from the nearby “virtual village” to provide labor for the farm. virtual farmers receive “virtual micro loans” with the understanding that they will work to implement the gamer’s strategy and generate enough income to pay off their loans in three years. groups of farmers use their collective micro loans to purchase machines, supplies and other resources specified in the gamers strategy, including fertilizer, herbicide and insecticide; tools and equipment for cultivation, irrigation, planting, weeding and harvesting; even livestock. the best overall strategy will deliver the most revenue and sustainability from the sales of crops, livestock, produce and carbon
